RETOLD: Final report approved by the EU

RETOLD Earns High Praise for Innovation and Impact in Open-Air Museums
The European project Retold Stories – Sustaining Cultural Memories in Open-Air Museums, led by EXARC (Netherlands), has received an outstanding score of 80/100 for its impactful delivery and visionary approach in strengthening the open-air museum sector across Europe.
Developed to empower museums preserving intangible heritage, the project met - and exceeded - the expectations of the EU programme it was part of. Through a dynamic partnership of six organisations, including open-air museums, a university, and a digital media studio, the project brought together a unique blend of expertise. This consortium created a powerful synergy that enriched skills, fostered collaboration, and embraced innovation.
At the heart of RETOLD was a pioneering multimodal methodology for documenting and preserving both tangible and intangible heritage. Using cutting-edge tools like VR, photogrammetry, videography, and ethnographic research, the team captured the essence of buildings, crafts, and traditions - making cultural stories accessible, immersive, and inclusive, especially for people with disabilities or fewer opportunities.
Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the project adapted with remarkable agility. Training schedules were reimagined, digital participation was embraced, and objectives were realigned - all without compromising on impact or quality. The project not only enhanced the digital documentation skills of museum staff through hands-on workshops and vlogging tutorials but also boosted transnational mobility and strengthened networks across the cultural heritage field. The comprehensive resources and practical tools developed during RETOLD remain publicly accessible on the RETOLD website, cementing the project’s legacy and long-term sustainability.
A Model of Excellence in Cultural Cooperation
RETOLD stands as a model of effective coordination, proactive partnership, and meaningful stakeholder engagement. With no major weaknesses identified and challenges expertly navigated, the project exemplifies the power of collaboration, resilience, and creativity. It not only delivered tangible results but also set a benchmark for future initiatives in cultural heritage preservation - ensuring Europe’s open-air museums are equipped to thrive in a digital, inclusive, and ever-evolving cultural landscape. The EU congratulates RETOLD for their creativity, resilience, and contribution to the future of cultural heritage in Europe.
