RETOLD: Steinzeitpark Dithmarschen creates and presents digital 3D models

As part of the RETOLD project, Steinzeitpark Dithmarschen took part in a case study exercise to explore the integration of 3D media in their current digital online presence. To illustrate the process of deciding on a methodology, creating the media materials, and then using them on their website, the RETOLD reports on retold.eu now include a section on AOZA’s process and experience with 3D digital media. Opened in 1999, this 80-acre German Neolithic cultural site features reconstructed buildings situated in a neolithic landscape, and hands-on activities like flint knapping and leatherwork. Already utilizing digital tools, such as 360-degree imagery and social media channels like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, the museum aimed to expand its storytelling capabilities and improve inventory documentation through 3D technology.

During the four-month case study, Steinzeitpark collaborated with Nuwa Studios to refine website design, embed 3D models, and address technical challenges. Using a digital SLR camera and drone, staff created three photogrammetry models, processed via Reality Capture and Blender. These models were presented on hosting platform Sketchfab as annotated tours, and integrated into the website and PausAR Viewer, enabling AR functionality.

Despite initial challenges with 3D integration, Steinzeitpark leveraged open-source tools, free online tutorials, and volunteer expertise to modernize its presentation on a minimal budget. By balancing innovation with practicality, the project successfully demonstrated how smaller museums can adopt 3D technology without overwhelming resources.
