Castro de Vigo (ES)
The Park of Vigo was the place were the town started, in form of a castrum, in the 2nd century BC.
The Castro de Vigo is located in the Monte del Castro, located in the urban area of the city. The excavations of last century, in the northeastern wing of the mountain, allowed recovering a score of constructions and numerous structures excavated in the rock corresponding to canals, pias, post holes, etc.
The excavated remains are a small part of a castreño village that would extend through the wings of the mountain, inhabited between the 2nd century BC. It was abandonded peacefully in the third century AD, probably due to the transfer of its inhabitants to the Areal area.
Based on the information provided by the site and other similar forts, three buildings that illustrate an initial moment of Roman occupation have been reproduced.
The original walls seem small and insignificant. However, it is these who are authentic. They are the ones built by their inhabitants, about two thousand years ago, to live with their families. For all this, and because they offer archaeological information, they are valuable documents of the past that we must know and conserve.
