Key Features:

  • Historical Buildings: The museum features over 50 original buildings, including farmhouses, mills, barns, and workshops, transported from different regions of Denmark and other Scandinavian territories. These buildings are carefully restored and furnished to represent the time periods and rural lifestyles they belonged to, covering various social classes and trades.
  • Regional Diversity: The buildings are organized according to the regions they come from, highlighting the differences in architectural styles, building materials, and cultural traditions across Denmark and nearby areas. From Jutland’s large farms to traditional fishing villages, the museum provides a wide-ranging view of rural life in Scandinavia.
  • Living History and Activities: Frilandsmuseet often brings history to life with reenactors dressed in period clothing who demonstrate daily activities, traditional crafts, and farming methods. Visitors can see activities like cooking, weaving, and blacksmithing, giving them a hands-on understanding of how people lived and worked in the past.
  • Scenic Landscapes: The museum covers a vast area of over 40 hectares, including gardens, meadows, and farmlands. Visitors can stroll through the countryside and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, which complement the historical buildings.
  • Animals and Agriculture: In keeping with its focus on rural life, Frilandsmuseet also features traditional livestock breeds, which are kept on-site to enhance the authenticity of the experience.
