Pfahlbausiedlung Wauwil (CH)
The 50th anniversary of „Lions Club Willisau“ in the municipality of Wauwil, near Luzern needed to be marked with a landmark celebration and an interesting and useful project. The village Wauwil counts about 1600 inhabitants. In 2002, at the Wauwiler moor, a bird watch tower was built thanks to a large investment of time and money of the Lions Club.
The plans for the 50th anniversary were to construct a lake dwelling settlement (thanks to the many Neolithic finds of international importance here in the moor) together with an information pavilion and (from Autumn 2009 on) an educative archaeological track with a scientific approach.. It has become a joint project of the Kantonsarchäologie Luzern, the Lions Clubs Willisau and the Municipallity Wauwil.
Preparations started in Summer 2007 and the first activities were about in April 2008. With construction work starting in March 2009, the official opening of the settlement was on June 6th 2009.
The concept foresees individual (non-guided) visits to the pavilion, path and settlement. Explanatory text boards are made which appeal to different age groups, especially with reconstruction drawings and scenes out of the daily life in the various stages of the past. Educational material is available and can be booked through https://urkultour.ch/wauwil/. It is also possible to book guided tours.
